If you use the windows launcher the bug is fixed, however if you are running windows 7 you have no choice but to use the dos version where the bug isn’t fixed.

Because of one or two incorrectly set bytes in all dos versions of the game( 1.0 through to 1.4), no matter what difficulty was selected, the difficulty bug would reset to beginner at the end of the first mission. I’m fairly sure the difficulty level bug was fixed in the collector’s edition version, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t have patched that in the original, DOS version. After all, I can’t imagine Microprose did much more than port the latest DOS version to Win95 when they made that, so if they got it working in Win95, it should’ve been working …
